11 sand loaded vehicles detained

Thoubal, July 23 2019:
Volunteers of Thoubal River Conservation Committee along with Thoubal police detained 11 vehicles loaded with 'river sand' early morning today.
Suspecting some are mining river sand and transporting them at night against the order of the Manipur High Court which prohibits illegal river sand mining, volunteers and the police personnel in plain clothes were staking out at Thoubal Melaground and Thoubal Magic Parking areas from 12 midnight.
The 11 vehicles - 9 Tata and 3 Dumpers loaded with sand approached from Yairipok side and subsequently they were stopped and detained, said the committee members.

The detained vehicles are with the Thoubal Forest Range Office.
Appropriate actions will be taken up after investigating the origin of the sand, said forest officials.
Meanwhile, the owners of the vehicles have claimed that the 'sand are not of the Thoubal river and were mined from privately owned areas'.
On the other hand, workers at Malom Jalliyanbi claimed that there have been no sand mining activity on the river bed following the HC order.
Workers are now mining sand from their respective privately owned land/properties to support families, they said questioning why the sand carrying trucks were stopped.
The river sand miners are facing serious hardships, they said and appealed authorities concerned and Government to look into their plight also.
It may be noted that the Thoubal River Conservation Committee had been protesting river sand mining in the river as it had highly 'polluted the river' .
