Seized tobacco items burnt

Banned tobacco products worth about Rs 76.20 lakh and seized by police from near Pallel police station on May 13 this year were destroyed today by burning at Kiyam Tangjeng Maning of Thoubal district in the presence of top district level officials and locals.
As reported earlier, a team of Pallel police station recovered the banned tobacco products from two Moreh-bound trucks during checking
of vehicles.
The trucks' owners have been identified as Lalmampuia (MN02A/5120) s/o N Seithanga of Hmuia Veng, Churachandpur and Shelal Lupheng (MN07T/0036) s/o (L) Lunshopao Lupheng of Moreh
Ward No.7 .
Six individuals who were transporting the banned items and taken into police custody have been named as (driver) Lathangliana Mizo s/o Ramliana of Churachandpur Hmuia Veng, Thangboi Paite (230 s/o Paokhanlian Paite of Gouchinkhup Veng, New Lamka (ccpur), Lhingboi Lupheng (35) w/o Thongmaang Lupheng of Moreh WN.7 Canaan Veng, (driver) Sapam Somorjit Singh (25) s/o (L) s Borsing of Khongjom Sapam Leikai , Chonsei Lupheng (33) s/o Paothang Lupheng of Moreh WN.7 Canaan Veng and Jamkhosan Touthang (28) s/o Tongmang Touthang of Moreh WN.7 Canaan Veng.
The seized tobacco products included 280 cartoons of Parizat Zarda, 15 Baba Zarda cartoons, 44 cartoons of 350 Signal Zarda (small size) and six cartoons of 350 Signal Zarda (big) .
According to a police officer present at the disposal site, the confiscated items were handed over to Food Safety Officer, Thoubal district on May 14 before the said consignment was kept in the custody of Kakching police station.
An order issued by District Magistrate, Thoubal on August 20 had asked authority concerned to dispose the tobacco products eventually resulting in the district administration narrowing down on Kiyam Tangjeng Maning as the safest site for its disposal.
