Speaking as a Special Invitee on the occasion, Dr Waikhom Romesh, Asst Prof of GP Women's College, who was also the jury member of the essay competition, observed that Hueiyen Lanpao is that newspaper which awakens the people of the state at the break of the dawn every day to enlighten the society.
If one is to understand Manipur to the core, one should read Hueiyen Lanpao, he suggested.
He further stated that 'Meeteilon' does not necessarily means Meetei Language only.
It is the union of Meetei Script and Meetei language.
As Manipuris, we need to understand Meeteilon.
We need to protect and promote it.
He also advised the students study the script and the language till graduation as there is greater chance of success in the various competitive examinations like Civil Services if one writes the examination in his own native script and language.
Expressing unhappiness over the alleged failure of the State Government to set up institutions specially for the promotion of Meeteilon, Dr Romesh pointed out that there is no provision for promotion of Meeteilon in the 12th five year plan of the government.
He further pointed out that just as foreign students study in China are required to understand Chinese language, the state government should come up with certain policies where one is compelled to learn Meeteilon if he/she wants to come to Manipur for studies or for any other purposes.
Other members on the dais which included Yendrenbam Mangi, Chief Editor of Hueiyen Lanpao; Hemanta Ningomba, Editor of Manipuri Edition; Satyajit Usham, Editor of English Edition and Shivadutta Luwang, Editor of Meetei Mayek Edition also spoke on the occasion.
The members on the dais observed that though Hueiyen Lanpao may lack in some sections, yet the manner of presenting the news reports without any fear and with greater responsibility has won the love and respect of the people, thus emerging as a formidable newspaper to be reckoned with.
It is this aspect that makes Hueiyen Lanpao to stand out from the rest of the herd.
