'Head and Neck Cancer highest among various types of cancer'

Imphal, February 03, 2012: Among the different types of cancer detected in the state, Head and Neck Cancers are the highest detected cancer types, said Professor Y Dr Indibor of the Department of Radiotherapy, RIMS, Imphal today.

He was speaking as resource person at the Cancer Awareness Programme organised by the Dean of Students' Welfare, Manipur University at the Senate Hall of the University today.

Prof Indibor said that 30 to 50 % of the total 1500 cancer detected each year in the state are Head and Neck Cancer types.

Lung Cancer is one of the most common cancer detected both male and female patients.

The worldwide cancer burden has reached 25 million with new detection rate of 12.7 million per year and death rate of 7.6 million every year.

Out of the total death rate due to cancer, 5 million deaths are occured in developing countries.

Cancer causes the highest deaths among other Non-communicable Diseases in India with a record of more than 8 lakh every year making it a nightmare for the government as well as the people in the health sector.

While 80 percent of cancer cases are detected by the patients in the late stage, it is very important to diagnose the disease early so as to prevent the disease from taking toll of human lives, he said.

Head of the Department of Radiotherapy of RIMS Prof Th Tomcha said that Cancer has become a menace in global health care system with cancer detection rising alarmingly each year.

Going by the present trend, there is a constant fear in the minds of the health workers that the disease might conquer almost half of the total population of the world by 2020. He further said that death rate due to cancer has surpassed other diseases like HIV/AIDS, TB and Malaria.

In Manipur, the most common types of cancer detected in men are Lung Cancer, Stomach Cancer.

and Nasopharynx Cancer while the types are Lung Cancer, Cervical Cancer and Breast Cancer in women.

In order to prevent this disease, one must avoid consuming smoked meat, salted foods, salted fish and tobacco products and should eat a balanced diets of green and leafy vegetables and fruits.

The awareness programme was graced by Vice Chancellor of Manipur University, Prof H Nandakumar and Deans of Students' Welfare Manipur University Prof Th Ratankumar as Chief Guest and President respecitvely.
