Imphal, January 31 2018:
At the directive of the High Court of Manipur, a team of PWD officials today inspected Imphal-Mao section of NH-2.After the inspection trip, PWD (National Highway Circle) SE Y Joykumar told media persons that a report would be submitted to the High Court of Manipur whether there should be tonnage limits on vehicles plying on Imphal-Mao section of the highway.
Similar reports would also be furnished to the Guwahati regional office of the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.
Tonnage limits are determined by MoRTH based on the types of vehicles and larger vehicles which can carry over 40 tonnes, Joykumar said.
A total 25 sinking zones which are highly dilapidated have been identified along Imphal-Mao section.
There must be certain restrictions at these zones for the safety of both vehicles and road, said the SE.
He said that general engineers cannot work out a permanent solution for the sinking zones.
The problem needs consultation with geo-technical engineers and geologists.
The authority concerned has been exploring avenues for a permanent solution in consultation with engineers specialised in the subject, Joykumar said.
Claiming that they have been working to upgrade Mao-Imphal highway to the level of an international highway, the SE appealed to all the people to bear the inconveniences for some time.
Given the existing dilapidated condition, overloaded vehicles would severely damage the highway.
As such, only rigid vehicles would be allowed to ply on Mao-Imphal section.
Moreover, whether rigid vehicles carrying 31 tonnes would be allowed to ply or not would be reconsidered, Joykumar said.
