A part of the joint initiatives of UNODC (United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime) and World Vision India in the fight against drug use in Mizoram, a workshop was organised today at Aijal Club here with the theme "Mobilising Private Sector to Combat Health and Social Consequences of Drug Use in Mizoram".
The workshop, organised in partnership with Mizoram Chamber of Commerce, was graced by Mizoram Health Mminister Lal Thanzara as chief guest.
Participants of the workshop were oriented on the possibility on the part of private companies in extending support and taking steps in the fight against drug use.
Lal Thanzara said that in spite of the wide public awareness on drug use and its consequences and the measures to prevent the same, thanks to the role of media, yet what is said and known is hardly turned into deeds.
Therefore, it is the responsibility of everyone to turn words into actions, the Minister said.
While dwelling on the harmful effects of drugs on human body and society as well, the Minister said that the Government can take only limited steps for the people, hence the need of distributing the responsibility.
He said that the coverage of health care system can be dealt with by private companies through corporate social responsibility.
It is thankful indeed that steps have been taken in this regard, the Minister said.
Kunal Kishore, UNODC, who also addressed the workshop, said that private companies operating in Mizoram have rendered commendable social services under corporate social responsibility.
He added that taking steps in making the most use of such contribution in combating drug use and helping drug abusers is what is needed by the society.
In the workshop today, presided over by JT Vanlalngheta, Secretary, Mizoram Youth Commission, he invited resource persons to present their resource papers on relevant topics.
