State excels others in SBP implementation

Besides Manipur earning the distinction of being the Best State in the implementation of Saakshar Bharat Programme (SBP) among the entire North Eastern States including West Bengal, the State has been projected as 'model state' in the country with regard to implementation of Saakshar Bharat programme.
Addressing a press meet today, Education Minister, M Okendro Singh said he has sent a congratulatory message to Union Human Resource Minister, Pallam Raju on the National Literacy Mission Authority being selected for the UNESCO King Sejong Literacy Prize 2013 in recognition of its effective implementation of Saakshar Bharat Programme.
The Prime Minister had launched the SBP (Literate India) Programme on September 8, 2009 as a flagship programme.
Launched with the aim to impart literacy to 70 million adults by 2017, the programme has achieved visible success in its four years of implementation by making 17.3 million adults literate.
Chandel, Tamenglong, Thoubal and Senapati districts of the State are among the 365 selected districts of the country where the first phase of the programme is implemented, the Education Minister said.
He added that 257 Adult Education Centres have been opened in the four districts.
Five centres each in the four districts have been equipped with adequate apparatus with the financial assistance from Containers Corporation of India Ltd (CONCOR) .
Not only imparting literacy to many adults, the centres also provided several vocational skills to the adults.
Around 77,263 illiterate adults have enrolled for imparting literacy under the State Literacy Mission Authority till March 31 this year.
Among them 55,841 adults have passed the nation-wide assessment conducted by NIOS and NLMA, the Minister said.
Okendro further said that he would participate in the SAARC Education Minister meet to be held from Sept 7 at Vigyan Bhavan, New Delhi.
