Haipi mapped for eco-tourism project

Imphal, February 18 2016: Haipi village of Sadar Hills would be included in a eco-tourism project which would be taken up by the State Government under the sponsorship of the Ministry of DoNER.

This was announced by Chief Wildlife Warden PN Prasad at the closing function of a three-day Mithun Mela Cum Farmers Training Programme organised by KVK Hengbung under the sponsorship of the National Research Centre on Mithun, Nagaland at Haipi village.

He said that Haipi village has potential in different sectors.

The village would be quite suitable for cultivation of horticulture crops, vegetables and also for taking up many allied activities.

Although many areas have been facing scarcity of water, water is available abundantly at Haipi on account of careful preservation of natural forests.

As such, agriculture and horticulture can be taken successfully at the village.

Mithun (Shandang) can survive at Haipi as the forests areas are carefully protected, PN Prasad noted.

For its breathtaking landscape, careful protection of forests and successful rearing of Shandang, Haipi would be made a key spot for taking up an eco-tourism project for which a detailed project report is being prepared, he continued.

Preparation of the DPR would be completed within two months and the same would be submitted to the Ministry of DoNER.

He also appealed to the villagers to submit photographs of herds of Shandang so that the importance of Haipi in rearing Shandang can be highlighted.

Shandang milk is more nutritious than milks of other milch animals.

Saying that prosperity of Haipi village depends on successful rearing of Shandang, the Chief Wildlife Warden called upon the National Research Centre on Mithun, Nagaland to take up necessary measures in order to increase the population of Shandang in Haipi.

From the side of the State Government, rock-salt would be provided to Shandang farmers of Haipi very soon, RN Prasad said.

The closing function presided by ex-Minister Thangminglen Kipgen was also attended by ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Nagaland ex-Director Dr Chandan Rajkhowa as guest of honour.

Dr Chandan Rajkhowa said that the total population of Shandang in Manipur is just around 10,000.He urged the policy makers and the Government to provide necessary assistance to scientists who are working to raise the population of Shandang.

ICAR-NRC on Mithun, Nagaland Director Dr Abhijit Mitra and Horticulture Director K Kipgen were also seated on the dais as guests of honour.

A demonstration session on identification of Mithun and medical treatment was also held as a part of the closing function.
