Imphal, February 18 2016:
The demonstration against the renaming of Thangting as Kangvai subdivision under the aegis of Khousabung Subdivision Demand Committee (KSDDC) continued at Khousabung where protesters staged sit-in cum candle light vigil for the fifth consecutive day today.
The protesters have been demanding renaming of Thangting as Khousabung subdivision as per the wishes of the people covered by the new SDO/BDO circle.
They said that Khousabung has an edge over Kangvai as it presents the most convenient location for the subdivisional headquarters.
Various social activists and chiefs also joined women folk of the area in the sit-in cum candle light vigil tonight.
Meanwhile, KSDDC secretary, S Gouneu warned of launching severe forms of agitation if the Govt fails to pay heed to their demand at the earliest.
He said that the Committee has been launching democratic protests since the Cabinet approved the renaming of Thangting as Kangvai on Feb 10 .
The committee, in collaboration with like-minded civil society organisations, will intensify the stir if the State Govt so desires to turn a deaf ear to the people's cry for justice.
He further said that the Committee will announce its next course of agitation within a couple of days.
The State Govt should be held solely responsible for any untoward outcome, he warned.
It may be mentioned that 100 chiefs out of the 125 villages covered by the new subdivision circle had conveyed their wish to the Govt to locate the subdivisional headquarters at Khousabung, saying that the village is most suitable to locate a subdivisional headquarters.
Contrary to the wishes of the people, the State Cabinet gave its approval to locate the subdivisional headquarters at Kangvai, the KSDDC rued.
Whereas Kangvai is located just about 8 kms away from Ccpur district headquarters, Khousabung is at the centre of the villages covered by the new SDO/BDO circle, the KSDDC said.
