Senapati, February 18 2016:
Joining the vocal condemnations of the alleged harassment and assault of Naga Students' Federation (NSF) leaders on February 14 at Mantripukhri by Manipur police commandos, the United Naga Council (UNC) has demanded stringent punishment of those involved in the unwanted incident.
All officers and personnel involved in the incident should be booked and disciplinary action should be taken up against them, demanded UNC.
A statement released by the publicity wing of UNC stated that Manipur police commandos are well known for their excesses in the State especially in tribal areas and added that they have been moulded as a killing machinery by the State Government.
It is a force that is marred by fake encounters, killing innocent civilians, harassing public, suppressing peoples voice and others, it added.
Urging the Central Government to intervene in the matter at the earliest, the UNC noted that Manipur police commandos have been committing such crimes against the people since its creation.
A machinery the present 'anti-tribal' and communal Congress State Government has used to promote "Goonda Raj" in Manipur.
Therefore, it is the immediate duty of the Centre to consider the voice of the people and take up action against the unlawful activities of the police commandos.
The UNC recalled that the tribals and Nagas of Manipur have not forgotten the killing of two innocent young men at Mao gate in May 2010, the two innocent lives at Ukhrul in August 2014 and shooting and injuring of many innocent civilians at Tangkhul Somrei Naga village during Christmas festival in 2015 .
In all these cases the Manipur police commandos were involved, charged UNC.
The recent harassment and assault of NSF leaders who were on their way to Ukhrul on an official invitation from the UNC for Lui-Ngai-Ni festival only displays the nature of how Manipur commandos continue to specifically target Naga leaders, charged UNC.
