Imphal, May 09 2011:
The Centre for Organisation Research and Education (CORE) has strongly condemned the alleged custodial torture leading to the dead of Thokchom Ranjit (48) s/o Thokchom Chinglen of Itham Nungoi.
This was the second event this year in which the high-handed, unlawful practice of arbitrary detention without arrest memo and torture leading to dead has occurred in Manipur, CORE noted in a press release.
The actions of the Manipur Police can never be condoned or excused as a mere 'mistake' as the police reportedly told the deceased's family.
Severest punishment and disciplinary action must be awarded to the perpetrators and their senior officers, it demanded.
While sharing solidarity with the bereaved family, it demanded the Government of Manipur to institute a judicial enquiry at the highest level immediately into the custodial death of Ranjit.
The family of the deceased must be awarded the highest financial compensation and social support must be extended to Ranjit's widow and the surviving two children, it added.
