Imphal, November 01 2019:
Demanding immediate withdrawal of military personnel being stationed at three colleges of Imphal, DESAM and AIMS have threatened to take the matter to the High Court of Manipur.
Speaking to media persons at their Kwakeithel office today, DESAM secretary general Oinam Shital decried that deployment of military personnel at the three colleges in connection with the political dialogue held between the Government of India and NSCN-IM is highly condemnable.
Together with like-minded student bodies and CSOs, DESAM has been undertaking a campaign since 2008 to make all educational institutes of the State disturbance free zones, Shital said.
Deployment of military personnel at educational colleges is something unwarranted.
It is highly questionable as to why the State Government has been stationing a large number of military personnel at the three colleges, he said.
In connection with an incident which took place on July 5, 2011 in Chhattisgarh which was followed by deployment of military personnel in several educational institutes of the State, the Supreme Court passed an order categorically stating that no military personnel should be stationed at educational institutes, Shital cited.
He then questioned the State Government as to why military personnel are being stationed at colleges despite being aware of the Supreme Court's particular order.
The military personnel currently stationed at the three colleges should be withdrawn at the earliest otherwise DESAM and AIMS would be compelled to take the matter to the High Court of Manipur for defying the Supreme Court's directive, Shital warned.
The State Government must ensure that no educational institute is turned into a military camp, he added.
