Training on bird flu held

A three-day training on 'capacity building for veterinary doctors & para-vets in preparedness, control and containment of avian influenza (bird flu) in Manipur' organised by Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Services commenced from today at the Conference Hall of Manipur State Veterinary Council, Sanjenthong.
Inaugurating the training programme as the chief guest, director (Vety & AH) Dr Th Jeevan Singh said ever since the first case of avian influenza (bird flu) was reported in India in 2006 Government of India has been taking up various preventive measures till date.
To prevent outbreak of the deadly viral disease in Manipur the State's Veterinary Department had carried out large-scale culling of birds (chickens) as a pre-emptive step but there is no certainty that avian influenza has been completely eradicated in the country, said the Director who expressed confidence that organising training programmes like today's will keep veterinary doctors and department personnel on constant alert to face any eventualities.
As resource persons of the event, specialist (disease) Dr K Gopal spoke on 'State Action Plan on Avian Influenza', Dr Ng Ibotombi Singh on 'General outline of avian influenza and its present status', and Dr L Chaoba Singh on 'Collection, preservation and dispatch of samples for confirmation of bird flu' .
Moreover, the afternoon session had deliberations on 'Bio security in poultry farming with relation to bird flu' by Dr Ksh Pabitra, while Dr Ng Ibotombi spoke on 'Practical training on downing and undowning of PPE and collection of sample from birds', Dr K Gopal on 'Surveillance plan for bird flu', and Dr L Chaoba on 'Practical training on culling, disposal of infected material, disinfection, clean-up & sanitization' .
