Imphal, January 14, 2011:
It has been reported that some Naga MLAs have started receiving intimations from the UNC to resign from their positions.
The UNC had earlier asked Naga MLAs to resign on or before January 31. An intimation was received by an MLA signed by UNC president Samson Remei, dated January 12.The intimation mentioned the names of seven Naga MLAs, including the MLA who received the intimation.
It was handed over to the MLA yesterday by an auto-rickshaw driver through the MR personnel guarding the MLAs quarters, a source said.
The names of the seven MLAs mentioned in the intimation are Morung Makunga of 42-Tengnoupal AC, Dr Khashim Ruivah of 45-Chingai AC, Danny Shaiza of 44-Ukhrul AC, Wungnaoshang Keishing of 43-Phungyar AC, N Awangbou of Tamei AC, K Raina of Tadubi AC and M Thorii of Mao AC.
The first six MLAs were elected with the backing of UNC in the state Assembly election in 2007.MLA Thorii was not included when UNC asked for resignations before.
This time his name has been included.
The list mentioned in the intimation also excluded the names of Gaikhangam, MLA of 58-Nungba AC, who is also the president of MPCC, DD Thaisii, MLA of 47-Karong AC who is a cabinet minister in the SPF government and Khangthuanang Panmei independent MLA of 53-Tamenglong AC.
The intimation states, "The UNC presidential council meeting which was held on January 8, 2011 at the office of the UNC, Tahamzam had resolved to inform you that your good self is asked to clear your position on your membership of the Manipur Legislative Assembly to the Naga public on or before the 31st January, 2011". The intimation also gave reasons which it felt was "necessary and immediate" as the "Naga people has a political decision for their survival, which ultimately prompted the threatened Nagas in Manipur to seek the intervention of GoI for an alternative arrangement outside the government of Manipur (GoM) as per declaration of the Naga Peoples Convention, dated the 1st July, 2010". The UNC submitted a memorandum to the Prime Minister of India on September 2010 at Delhi, as a result of which the GoI intervened and proposed a tripartite talks which was held on December 3, 2010. The second round of the tripartite talks is to be held in the later part of January.
The plight of the Nagas in Manipur is because of political victimization, therefore, the demand for an alternative arrangement is the need of the hour.
It also reminded clause (iii) of the undertakings allegedly signed by them on January 16, 2007, that is, "That, I shall resign from the Manipur Legislative Assembly if called upon to do so by the Naga People, represented by the UNC".
If the MLAs fail to honour the undertaking of January 16, 2007, the Naga people will consider that they have defied the said undertaking, the intimation finally mentioned.
