As a part of the International Fortnight Observation Protesting Violence Against Women, a one-day discussion on 'Domestic violence and its impact on the family, community and society' was held at Manipur Press Club today.
The discussion session was jointly organised by nine NGOs associated with protecting rights of women and children.
Speaking at the occasion, WAD secretary Sobita Mangsatabam said Manipur has more than 10,000 widows who lost their spouses due to ongoing armed conflict or HIV/AIDS infection.
Apart these two causes domestic violence has become a serious cause for concern, she said and strongly suggested that violence against women needs to be investigated and the guilty ones pulled up and punished according to law.
Expressing hope that the newly appointed DGP will do the needful for expeditious investigation and disposal of pending cases related to crime against women and children, Sobita also called upon every section of the society to contribute their mite in protecting rights of women and children.
Apart from testimonies by four victims of domestic violence the discussion session was addressed by lady advocate Premlata and Imphal Free Press editor Chitra Ahanthem.
