Imphal, January 29 2018:
Pointing out that there is no fund for tribal languages in the State budget for 2017-18 both for approved and unapproved languages, the Council of Tribal Languages and Literature Societies Manipur (CTLLSM) has appealed to the Chief Minister to earmark certain amount in the proposed State budget for 2018-19 for continuation of tribal languages in school education and promote tribal languages.
In a memorandum addressed to Chief Minister N Biren, CTLLSM said that during the previous Government, there was TRI's fund for printing of school text books of tribal languages to the tune of Rs 16 lakh but even this meagre amount has been cut with the coming of the new State Government.
The State's proposed budget for 2018-19 is also sidelining the tribal languages of the State.
It seems the new State Government is going to uproot the tribal languages from the school education system and ultimately from the soil of Manipur, it alleged.
All the 35 tribal languages in Manipur have now become endangered due to lack of patronage of the State Government, said the memorandum.
In the absence of any fund allocation, tribal students are going to face serious shortage of school text books commencing from the academic session 2018-19.As far as fund allocation is concerned, the State Government has been always sidelining the tribal languages since decades back, it added.
