Chandel joins opposition chorus to oil exploration

In the latest development over the proposed oil exploration by central government, social organizations in Churachandpur, Chandel and Jiribam have come strongly against any move without prior informed consent of the people.
Speaking to Hueiyen Lanpao, President of Zomi Students' Federation (ZSF), Muan said "We indigenous local people have no objection as such to the government's proposed oil exploration in Churachanpur, Jiribam and Chandel, however, we opposed it on account of not taking our prior consent on the project".
He also alleged that one Canada based company, SENE, has prepared a 20-paged assessment report on Environment Impact Assessment of the project without visiting the spots.
Stating that natural resources are the property of the local native people, the President asserted that the agencies concerned should at least consult the local people regarding the future socio-economic Impact Assessment of the project without visiting the spots.

Meanwhile, three organizations namely Hmar Students' Association (HSA), Zomi Human Rights Foundation (ZHRF), Zomi Students' Federation (ZSF) jointly organized a 'Consultation Meeting Regarding Oil Exploration In Manipur' at the office of Hmar Students' Association, H/Q at Rengkai Road in Churachandpur district today.
During the consultation meeting, the members unanimously decided to oppose the proposed oil exploration in Churachanpur, Jiribam and Chandel.
