Imphal, June 30, 2012:
In sync with the Director General Assam Rifles' vision to embark on a 'Go Green Drive' in the entire North East from July 1 to 15, IGAR (S) Maj Gen UK Gurung has reportedly chalked out a detailed strategy to make significant contribution in this regard in Manipur.
For effective implementation of the DGAR's initiative, the IGAR (S) has exhorted all sectors and units to plant as many tress as possible during this period, said a PRO IGAR (S) release adding that cooperation and assistance from the forest department has also been solicited besides motivating the villagers, particularly children, for their contribution in the tree plantation drive.
Number of events have been planned for the 'Go Green Drive' fortnight in the month of July which is possibly the best suitable time for tree plantation.
Moreover, emphasis will be on creating awareness in the society to come forward in this noble cause by protecting these plants/trees to grow and give maximum benefit to the people of Manipur, the release maintained.
Noting that Manipur is well known for its diverse natural vegetation covering nearly 64 percent of the total geographical area of the State, the PRO release observed that in the last decade or so, like elsewhere, the forest cover in this beautiful part of the country too has declined significantly.
The charm of the place, however is the greenery with a moderate climate, making it a tourist haven.
Assam Rifles, the friends of the Manipur have pledged to contribute their efforts towards promoting greenery in and around their deployment areas.
