Imphal, May 29: Even as the controversy over the incident of shooting and causing grievous injuries to a student of Manipur University by Imphal East Police Commandos on May 14 is still raging, another student has been hospitalised after being shot at on his right shoulder by Thoubal Police Commandos last night.

The latest victim has been identified as Takhellambam Jackie Chan (20) s/o Muhindro of Pureiromba Khongnangkhong, a B Sc 2nd year student in Madras Christian College, Chennai, currently on vacation.

According to police, on receipt of specific information about the movement of UGs, Thoubal Police Commandos were laying in wait along the Irengband Road leading to Kakching at around 6.30 pm yesterday and Jackie Chan was hurt when the police commandos opened fire in a bid to stop three persons coming on a Bajaj Pulser mobike (MN-01N/5734).At first the commandos fired in the air.

But as the motor cycle did not stop, the commandos opened fire at them.

Police said every possible assistance was extended to injured student.

A bullet that hit Jackie Chan has pierced through his right shoulder.

According to Jackie Chan, the incident occurred while he was returning along with two other friends from visiting the house of one of their common friend at Keirak.

At Keirak, they have been frisked by AR personnel but were let off after they identified themselves.

However, along the road from Kakching to Irengband, they saw no sign of any security personnel, yet they could hear sound of gun firing.

Jackie Chan informed that he was driving the motor cycle and he came to know that he had been hit by the bullet only when he started feeling numbness on his right hand and his pillion riding friends pointed out to the oozing blood.

Instantly, they went to the house of their Tentha friend and the elders of the family took him to JN Hospital for treatment, Jackie said.

Meanwhile, AMSU and DESAM have strongly condemned the incident of firing and causing injuries to the student.

Talking to mediapersons at JN Hospital, general secretary of AMSU Premananda Tongbram demanded punishment of the police commandos involved in the firing and said AMSU would not remain quiet over the matter.

He also expressed apprehension over the possibility of eliminating the entire Manipuri society, if the Government of Manipur does not put reins on the activities of its Police Commandos who have started making innocent students as their soft target with immunity under the provisions of AFSPA.

Condemning the incident, publicity and propaganda secretary of DESAM KC Ibomcha, in a statement, also demanded befitting action against the police commandos involved in the shooting.

The incident has also shown that the Police Commandos have not been trained properly, Ibomcha said, adding that after subjecting innocent people to lot of suffering under the guise of imposition of AFSPA, security personnel seems to be targeting the students, who are the future pillars of the society.
