Briefing media persons, Prof Yogendra Singh said that, "The present situation of the market shed is dangerous because the building has been seriously damaged.
The administration has taken up the right steps by evacuating it and it should not be occupied before retrofitting." He further said, "The building does not need to be demolished nor does it require reconstruction.
It can be repaired and rehabilitated through extensive structural intervention after close analysis." He said, "Nobody can predict an earthquake.
At the same time, we cannot predict when the aftershock will occur and how massive it will be.
The present condition of the building is not safe and it should not be occupied till it is fully repaired." Detailed analysis would be conducted by the visiting team after which another team from the National Disaster Management Authority would visit the State to conduct a follow-up analysis.
A team from the National Building Construction Corporation Ltd (NBCC) and IIT Jodhpur Director CVR Murty would also visit the State.
In the meantime, women vendors of Ima Keithel staged a sit-in protest demanding the State Government to provide temporary market sheds for the vendors.
Khwairamband Nupi Keithel Semgat Sagatpa Lup vice-president RK Radhesana alleged that the market buildings suffered severe damages due to lack of quality control during construction process.
Women vendors depend on daily income to support their families.
The State Government should understand the hardship of the vendors and provide them temporary market sheds, she said.
"Women vendors have also approached Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh.
The Chief Minister has assured to take up necessary steps to restore the market buildings.
We had requested him to inspect the damaged buildings.
However, he did not turn up," Radhesana decried.
