Imphal, February 06 2020:
Street vendors took their anger and disappointment onto the streets after they were prohibited by Manipur police from convening a public meeting at GM Hall today to discuss the unfolding scenario after Imphal Municipal Corporation (IMC) imposed restrictions on their vending hours.
The street vendors under the aegis of Roadside Vendors Welfare Association (RVWA) yesterday announced that a public meeting would be convened at GM Hall at 11.30 am .

Speaking to media persons secretary of RVWA, Gurumayum Lembisana stated that when they started arrangements for the meeting at GM Hall in the morning, the police asked them to leave on the ground that CrPC 144 has been imposed in Imphal West district.
She further maintained that prohibiting them to even convene a meeting will only compel the street vendors to intensify their protest.
Later the street vendors staged a protest demonstration at Alu Gali raising various slogans demanding their rights and subsequently a confrontation broke out between the police and the street vendors.
The police used mock bombs to disperse the agitating women.
As the scuffle intensified, riot control vehicle with water cannons of Manipur police was called in.
In the meantime City police also picked up a shopkeeper named Amir for kicking away a tear gas that allegedly fell in front of his shop during the scuffle.
It is alleged that the tear gas which was kicked away by Amir hit the leg of an Executive Magistrate at the incident site.
Decrying the arrest, the shopkeepers of Alu Galli shut down their shops at Alu Galli.
Amir is stated to be at City police station till the time this report was filed in the evening today.
Later in the afternoon, the women street vendors thronged IMC office gate demanding withdrawal of the order that allowed vending hours from 5 am to 9 am only.
Some representatives of the street vendors were allowed to enter IMC office to meet the Commissioner.
However, it is said that the Commissioner was not present at his office.
