Imphal, May 14: A Manipur University student suffered bullet wound on the right thigh after he and another accomplish came under fire from a team of State security force at near Ucheckon Lairenpat of Imphal East district in late afternoon today.

The injured Thokchom Ranjit alias Angomcha (24) s/o Shyamchandra of Kongpal Kongkham Leikai is said to be a Second semester (Chemistry Department) students of MU and is currently undergoing treatment at Shija Hospital, langol.

Recounting the incident, Ranjit said he along with a friend Mayengbam Lamyanba s/o Khamba of Khurai Sajor Leikai were on their way to meet a female friend at Keirao at around 4.30 pm.

As they neared Ucheckon Lairenpat a frisking party of the IRB reportedly attached to the Imphal East commando unit stopped them while astride a Kinetic Honda at a nearby waiting shed.

Even as some of the security team questioned why they covered their faces and threatened to thrash them a shot was fired hitting Ranjit on the thigh inspite of the duo reportedly identifying themselves as MU students.

Ranjit was of the view that if the incident had taken place after dusk the security team could have planted weapon and branded/framed them.

Meanwhile, DESAM and AMSU demanded stringent punitive action against the commander/personnel involved in the shooting.

AMSU also pledged unwavering support to any agitation launched in connection with the incident.

Interacting with newspersons at the DESAM office in this evening, its president Ashirjit Luwang cautioned that in case there is no legal action against the commando personnel involved in the incident within two days DESAM remaining silent would be wishful thinking.

Claiming that Superintendent of Imphal East district and the Officer in-charge concerned, when queried, had sought apology with regard to the incident, the DESAM leader while casting aspersions on conduct/activities of commando personnel desired that services of CBI sleuths be roped in to verify if wealth of the commandos officers and personnel are proportionate to their known source of income.

He alleged that civilians with relatively costly mobile phone handsets or carrying money are not safe whenever they come across commando teams.
