Imphal, May 24 2014 :
Fearing corporal punishment by teachers, 26 students of Standard Robarth Higher Secondary School, Canchipur fled away from their hostel.
Speaking to media persons at their office this afternoon, AMSU general secretary Laishram Reagan said that 26 students of the school ran out from their hostel at around 10.30 pm yesterday.
Running out from their hostel, the students took shelter at Youth Popular Club, Kyamgei.
They were taken back to the hostel by the school Principal at around 3 this morning.
Quoting the students who are reading in class VII, Reagan said the students were preparing to take bath when they were taken to the Principal's room and thrashed with cane.
Subjecting the young students to such brutal treatment is against the Right to Education Act 2005 .

Fleeing away of the students from the hostel which is fenced on all sides revealed that there are some major flaws in the administration of the school including hostels.
Keeping aside why the students fled away, what is detestable was the caning of young students leaving injury marks on the tender bodies, Reagan said.
Apart from scolding the students with strong words, the 26 students humiliated in front of other students.
The school authority should come up with convincing explanation with regard to this particular incident in addition to ensuring career of the students are not jeopardised.
AMSU would stand for the students, Reagan said.
One guardian said that he went to the hostel this morning as they were called by the school authority.
On reaching the hostel, the school authority accused the guardians of taking away their wards after appending signatures on the hostel's register.
Earlier, some students were beaten blue and black for complaining against the quality of food given at the hostel.
Yesterday's incident sparked off from a complaint made by the cook to the warden.
The cook complained that some students called them (cook and warden) as paid servants.
A group of 56 students were threatened by the hostel authority to point out the particular students who called the cook and the warden paid servants.
Fearing severe punishment, all 56 of them tried to run away from the hostel but only 26 succeeded, said the guardian.
