UCM sounds alert post NRC list in Assam

Imphal, September 04 2019: UCM president Sunil Karam has underlined the need and urgency for the people to stand together against the threat posed by the possible influx of over 19 lakh immigrants who have not been not included in the Assam's NRC list, into Manipur and the neighbouring States in the North East region.

Speaking at the 9th Ching Tam Traditional Cultural festival, organised by All Manipur Huiyen Lalong & traditional Culture Preservation Committee (AMHLATCPC) Manipur at Rup Mahal theatre today, he said that with the exclusion of over 19 lakh people in the final list of Assam's National Register of Citizen, the big question the people should be asking is where will these people be dumped.

It is rather inevitable these people will swarm Manipur and the neighbouring States seeking shelter, he remarked.

Considering the gravity of the situation, the State Government should also initiate precautionary measures at the earliest, Sunil added.

He maintained, as there is no Act to safeguard the place or the people from the influx of illegal migrants into the State, the people need to join hands and fight the threat.

Sunil further stressed on the necessity of the State Government to chip in with ideas to combat the said danger.

From the moment Manipur became a part of India, several external forces have been continuously trying to divide and hinder the relationship between the communities residing in the State, Sunil stated.

Regarding the peace talk between NSCN (IM) and the Government of India, Sunil said that the people are now more anxious as the Central Government's interlocutor for Naga peace talk as well as Governor of Nagaland RN Ravi has indicated that the conclusion of the peace talk is likely to come by October.

He said that the people of Manipur do not wish to interfere in the Naga peace talk nor create hindrance in any development concerning Nagaland.

However, the people will not stay mum or idle if the peace talk affects the integrity of the State and its people in any form, he warned.

Earlier, Prime Minister Modi assured the people that the FA has nothing to do with Manipur nor posed any threat to the State.

However, now the Central Govt is saying that the people or the stakeholders will be consulted regarding the matter.

UCM met the PM, as well as the Interlocutor RN Ravi and even submitted a memorandum against dividing Manipur on ethnic line and opposing the formation of any cultural autonomy like Pan Naga cultural body.

But, the Central Government has not given any response till date, he said.

Sunil appealed to the people of the State to remain alert and demanded the State Government to announce its stand on the Framework Agreement to its people.

He said that, in such crucial times, it is unfortunate the State's MLA and Ministers are shifting their loyalty and seat.

The leaders should focus on the people's welfare and the threats to the State, he remarked.

AMHLATCPC president Chanam Gambhir was also present in the function.
