Imphal, June 03 2021: Manipuri Sahitya Parishad condoled the demise of eminent sankirtan artist (pung) Hijam Gourasing Singh on May 22 at his residence in Thangmeiband Hijam Devan Leikai.

Hijam Gourasing Singh was awarded many accolades including Badyaratna (khol) at the 83rd Annual Summit of Manipuri Sahitya Parishad in 2018, Badyabhusan Upadhi in 2005, Manipur State Kala Akademi Award in 2012, Soyam Sidhyashri Award and State Kala Akademi Lifetime Achievement Award in 2019 .

During his lifetime, Hijam Gourasing dedicated his life for the development and upliftment of Manipuri art form 'Pung' specially 'Khol' .

He also had many eminent students from the state as well as other part of the country like Tripura and Assam, Manipur Sahitya Parishad also condoled the demise of drama writer, director and actor Elangbam Jaichandra Singh on May 24 at his residence in Keishamthong Elangbam Leikai Leirak Macha.

He was awarded Natya Bhushan at the 52nd Annual Summit of the Parishad held in 1987.He joined Manipur Dramatic Union as an actor in 1942 and also went on to become a stage singer.

His role as Safaba in MDU's Haorang Leishang Safabi was one of his most well known acts.

During his lifetime he wrote more than 70 dramas and directed more than 80 and was honoured with various accolades including Manipur State Kala Akademi Award 1992; State Kala Akademi Fellow 2004-05; Sangeet Natak Akademi, New Delhi, 2006 and Haobam Ibungo Yaima Ningshing Award.

Elangbam Jaichandra Singh also tour the nook and corner of the state in 1949 as the leader of Manipur Artists Touring Drama Party .

demise of nat sankirtan artist Rajkumari Sanatorribi Devi on May 28 at her residence in Keishampat Konjeng Hajari Leikai.

She was honoured with Sangit Bhushan at the 81 st Annual Summit of the Parishad in 2018 and Certificate of Honour at 1991 Republic Day celebration.

She became popularly known after releasing gramophone recorded songs Ha Chekla Nungshibi and Nokmi Nokmi Nungshiba, which were recorded at Calcutta (non Kolkata) when she was just 20 years of age.
