Imphal, July 18 2016:
An Amateur Boxing Competition, organised by the Red Shield Division began yesterday at Sainik School, Imphal.
According to a statement issued by PIB (DW), Imphal, Brig SKS Chauhan Deputy General Officer Commanding, Red Shield Division presented a set of boxing kits & other essential accessories to the School as an encouragement for students to excel in the sport.
The sport will also ensure physical and mental hardening of the students who will be serving the Nation in various disciplines in the future.
Manipur has produced all time great sports personalities of India, like Mary Kom, L Sarita Devi and L Devendro Singh in recent times and this sport needs to be encouraged at school level to ensure that young talent can be identified and groomed at an early age for representing the country.
Red Shield Division has envisioned that the innate boxing talent of the Manipuri students must be honed and this would provide ideal platform for National Level coaches to scout from.
The students will be trained by qualified coaches under the aegis of N Khunou Battalion of Loktak Brigade and a boxing tournament will also be organised by them.
The idea was appreciated by the School committee and welcomed with zeal and enthusiasm by the students as well.
The efforts of the Army will also go a long way in ensuring mental and physical agility of the young students not only when they join the armed forces but also in other walks of life.
