Imphal, July 18 2016:
Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) PN Prasad has categorically stated that the process of documentation for enlistment of Keibul Lamjao National Park (KLNP) as a World Heritage site has not been started.
As for the three places of India which were declared as World Heritage sites, they were already nominated, he asserted.
Nonetheless, an application was submitted in January this year to include KLNP, the only floating National park in the world, in the tentative list of World Heritage sites.
If KLNP is included in the tentative list, it would be assumed that KLNP has been admitted for inclusion in the list of World Heritage sites.
Even if KLNP has been nominated for inclusion in the list of World Heritage sites, it would not be immediately declared as a World Heritage site, PN Prasad said.
Before KLNP is declared as a World Heritage site, the place would be documented for at least three years and a number of committees would make spot assessment of the park.
The State Forest Department has been lobbying hard with the Wildlife Institute of India so that KLNP is declared as a World Heritage site, added the PCCF.
