Imphal, March 29 2016:
Three mortar shells, believed to be from the World War II era, were found in Motbung area in Senapati district, a senior police officer said today.
The objects, which include two M3 Lee Tank and one US M2 60 mm shells, were found by the locals at Motbung, located some 30 kms from the State capital yesterday, the officer said.
The villagers then informed the Sapermeina police station and the shells were taken in custody by police, the officer said.
The mortar shells might have been used during the Battle of Imphal when the Allied forces were locked in intense military engagement with the Japanese army in 1944, he said.
