ST students continue protest against MU's decision

Imphal, October 11 2016: ST students of Manipur University who left the university yesterday in protest against the Academic Council's meeting to follow reservation norms of the CEI (Reservation in Admission) Act 2006 staged a protest demonstration in front of Khuman Lampak Youth Hostel today.

On the other hand the Academic Council of MU, which met today, has decided to refer the matter to the Visitor (President of India) on the understanding that the decision of the Visitor will be final.

MUTSU spokesman Kakai Singsit said that they would launch different modes of agitation after consultation with tribal civil organisations if the Academic Council's decision is not revoked.

MUTSU would decide its next course of action in consultation with tribal CSOs based on the decision of the Academic Council which was holding another meeting today.

The MU authority should give a written assurance that the reservation norm of 7.5 per cent for ST students would not be followed in MU not only this academic season but also in the coming years too.

Kakai Singsit said that ST students would return to MU and attend classes only after the MU authority agrees to their demands.

He said that no tests, assignments or internal assignments should be conducted when ST students are staying | away from their classes.

MU authority should not do any-| thing which may rain career of ST students.

He also, expressed keen desire to book the VC in-charge, the Registrar in-charge and all the members of Academic Council for not complying with Central University rules, UGC instructions and Court orders.

Kakai Singsit said that necessary actions would be initiated against ST students if they are defying the call to leave MU hostels and stay away from classes.

Based on the decision of the Academic Council, MUTSU would decide its next course of action after consultation with KSO, ATSUM and ANSAM.

Meanwhile, a number of MU students and Meira Paibis of surrounding localities today staged a protest demonstration in front of the university's main gate demanding resolution of the reservation issue.

Speaking by the sidelines of the demonstration, MUSU finance secretary Hemam Ricky said that the Academic Council meeting held today did not take any decision to revoke the decision it took on October 8 .

Nonetheless, it decided to refer the matter to the Visitor (President of India), As per the representation, the decision/ recommendation of the Visitor would be final.

The VC in-charge conveyed that the Chief Minister asked them to revoke the Academic Council's decision of October 8 during a meeting yesterday.

Ricky said that MUSU would boycott classes if the admission process is not started by October 13 .
