Seven commercial sex workers who were caught together with a group of men have been rounded up and handed over to the Nupi Samaj.
Speaking to media persons at their Lamphelpat office today, All Manipur Women Social Reformation and Development Samaj (Nupi Samaj) president Th Ramani said that seven women and a group of men who were found in compromising positions were rounded up by village volunteers of Kadangband.
After reprimanding the sex workers and the group of men, the village volunteers handed over the sex workers to the Nupi Samaj at around 7.30 pm yesterday, Ramani said.
On questioning, some of the sex workers said that they turned to flesh trade to earn money for buying drugs.
They further disclosed that they have been working as sex workers for a long time and their clients include people occupying important positions of power in the Government.
Together with volunteers of the Nupi Samaj, staff of Meitei Leimarol Shinnai Shang gave counselling to the sex workers for the whole night, Ramani said.
Later, all the women were handed over to their families.
Saying that the sex workers belong to different communities, she appealed to all the parents to monitor the activities and behaviour of their daughters.
It is a matter of concern that some people were indulging in immoral acts when the State has been facing an unprecedented crisis, she added.
