Imphal, April 28 2021:
Government maintained fish farms across the State may be leased out in Public Private Partnership (PPP) model to the interested farmers.
The State Cabinet will take a decision on this very soon, said Fishery Minister S Rajen Singh today.
Speaking to the media during a press conference held at his office at Old Secretariat, Babupara, he said the Government is taking up steps to increase fish production in the State.
The objective of the PPP model is also to engage unemployed youths of the State.
This will give employment and provide them livelihood and income, he said.
He said that there are reports of unauthorised encroachment at the Government-maintained fish farms in Bishnupur district by some individuals in recent days.
Notice has also been served to one individual for encroaching at the Regional Pengba Farm, Haotak, Kumbi in Bishnupur district, he said and appealed to all the individuals concerned to cooperate with the Government initiatives and stop encroaching at the farms.
S Rajen said the State spends more than Rs 4 crore every year to buy fish from other States.
"This money can be saved if we focus towards the improvement of fish farms in the State.
All the officials of the Fisheries Department have been instructed to chalk out suitable plans in this regard," he added.
He also highlighted the Loktak Livelihood Mission, through which fish farming using cage culture will be widely practised in the Loktak Lake.
