Imphal, September 06 2015:
Expressing deep concern over soaring of prices of different essential commodities, the All Manipur Students' Union (AMSU) is set to conduct a survey at different markets regarding the matter soon.
Speaking to reporters AMSU secretary general Manjit Sarangthem said that people have been reeling under huge hardships due to steep rise of prices of essential commodities since the past few weeks.
Lamenting that the Government has done nothing to curb this price rise, Manjit questioned whether the Government intends to suck blood out of the common people in connivance with shopkeepers.
The State has witnessed over 100 per cent hike in prices of many essential commodities as compared to July, he said.
The price of potatoes per kg was Rs 15-16 in July and now it has been hiked to Rs 30 while price of onion per kg in July was Rs 35 and now it has increased to Rs 80-100, he said.
Price of black gram has been hiked from Rs 80-100 to Rs 150, red lentil from Rs 110 to Rs 150, yellow lentil from 120 to 160 and split gram from Rs 50 to 120, he said.
The State Government is maintaining silence although PDS rice is now sold at Rs 1100 per 50 kg bag in the market, he alleged.
Maintaining that the State Government must not turn a blind eye to people's woes, Manjit said that they must take up a tangible step to curb price rise within three days.
He further said that AMSU would also conduct a survey at different markets regarding the matter soon.
Manjit further said that the Government must also immediately check black marketing of fuel oil and carry out a drive to check fuel quality at different petrol pumps.
He also said that AMSU would also seek stock positions of different essential commodities from the authorities concerned.
Demanding the Government to make Legal Metrology Department and Food Safety Department functional within three days, Manjit cautioned that the Government must be held res- ponsible for any untoward incident if they continue to maintain silence on the issue and people's growing woes.
