A murder accused who was imprisoned and released on bail was stabbed critically by family members of the victim.
The violent attack occurred at Lilong Dam Makha, Thoubal district under Lilong police station at around 10 am today.
Police sources said that Md Salim (35) s/o Abdul Helim of Lilong Dam Makha was overpowered and taken away by some persons when he was walking in his locality this morning.
The abductors were all family members of Md Abdul Hakim (32) of Lilong Haoreibi Turel Ahanbi who was shot dead in the morning of December 24 last year.
In connection with the murder of Abdul Hakim, Salim was arrested by police and lodged in judicial custody.
He was released on bail about four days back.
The abductors took Salim to a nearby house and then to a paddy field where he was stabbed repeatedly.
Even as a team of Lilong police rushed in, people of the locality raised an uproar and sent the police team back by pelting stones.
Not long after police reinforcement including Thoubal commandos arrived at the scene and drove away the crowd by firing several rounds of tear gas shells and mock bombs.
Thus Salim was rescued but he suffered 80 per cent wounds all over his body.
He is undergoing treatment in RIMS in critical condition.
