Flash flood in CCpur sweeps away man

Imphal, July 31 2026: Heavy rainfall triggered flash floods in several places across Churachandpur district and swept away a 33-year-old man yesterday.

While rescue operations are still on, the man identified as Thangjohnson, son of Late Paukhanmung of Vengnum South, has not been found.

Thangjohnson was working at an embankment construction site on the bank of the Lanva River at Lanva village when he was swept away by the gushing water.

Believed to have been carried away by the river that feeds Khuga River, search and rescue operations were conducted at several places.

This is the second such incident reported this year from the district.

On June 11 recently, a Class VIII student identified as Lamboi- kim was swept away in a sudden flash flood in the district.

Notably, the district received heavy rainfall between 3.30 pm and 6 pm yesterday, swelling Lanva and Chengkon rivers and triggering flash floods.

The gushing water damaged several houses, shops and structures along the banks of the rivers and in Churachandpur town.

The district's Deputy Commissioner, Krishna Kumar, today visited flood-affected areas of Sielmat, Lower Chapel Lane, Hiangtam Lamka, Chieng-konpang and Beulalane within Churachandpur town.

During the visit, the DC distributed relief materials to flood-affected families, and assured the residents of all possible support from the district administration.

The DC further informed that damage assessment is underway for further assistance.

The Deputy Commissioner and district administration officials also visited various philanthropic organisations engaged in the search for Thangjohnson along Khuga River.
