Highlighting severe hardships faced by the people of Mao especially the student community due to destruction caused to school buildings by the massive landslides at Phikomei village area, Manipur University Students� Union appeals to the State Govt to rush additional relief materials and take up appropriate steps to minimise education related uncertainties.
A press statement of MUSU informing that a university student team led by newly elected president H Ashirjit Luwang had visited the landslide effected Phikomei village said around 300 students of Don Bosco and Sardar Patel High School of Mao area are facing education constraints as both the school buildings have been washed away by the landslides.
While Don Bosco School authorities are making alternative arrangement for unhindered education of their students those belonging to the Govt school faces uncertainty of their career, mentioned the MUSU statement while demanding adequate measures at the earliest by the State Govt and Edn Dept to save the career of the students.
MUSU will also launch a fund collection drive to assist the landslide affected families for which the general public are urged to extend cooperation.
Meanwhile, Mao Landslide Relief Committee has appealed to people to extend financial as well as material help to the landslide affected families.
It may be noted here that several families have been rendered homeless by the numerous landslides that have hit the Mao area during the last couple of days.
Union appeals: Desiring immediate attention of the state authorities to repairing the landslide damaged portion of National Highway 39 All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor workers� union said a team led by its general secretary assessed the situation at Phikomei village near Mao Gate and inquired problems faced by the stranded truck drivers and their assistants.
As the goods loaded trucks numbering about 500 have been stranded for 14 days since the landslide occurred most of the perishable goods have rotted emanating foul smell, said a Union press release.
Some of the drivers and assistants (handymen) have also been infected with diseases as they have to stay in open air due to the landslide, the release said.
Mentioning that medicines provided by State Health Service Directorate and those purchased by the Union were distributed to needy truck operators it also informed the drivers requiring further medical attention to consult and avail treatment at the Phikomei free medical camp where the Union have also provided medicines.
The Union also called upon the State authorities to take immediate steps and assist BRTF personnel in clearing the landslide to facilitate resumption of vehicular traffic along the national highway.
