Imphal, May 21 2023:
Imphal-Dimapur Highway or NH-2 which is considered to be a lifeline for all the people of Manipur is currently blocked at eight points by Kuki volunteers.
Kuki volunteers have been blocking the National Highway at Taphou, Hengbung, Changoubung, Kangpokpi, Keithelmanbi, Sapermeina, Motbung and Gamgiphai.
The Kuki volunteers after dividing themselves into several groups have been blocking the highway at these points round the clock in shifts.
Although the number of Kuki volunteers blocking the highway at these points is not many, they have been blocking movement of trucks and checking all other types of vehicles whether they are carrying any essential commodity.
Even though they cannot do anything to movement of security forces including Assam Rifles and CRPF, they do not allow movement of private vehicles if they are carrying essential commodities, sources informed.
Strangely, the Kuki volunteers do not give any specific reason or spell out any demand for blocking the highway at the eight points.
Nonetheless, they maintained that they would continue the blockade until they receive instruction or words from the Kuki Inpi.
So far, the Kuki Inpi has not spelt out their exact position.
Whenever security forces try to escort goods laden trucks, the Kuki volunteers strike electric poles with stones and other objects and thus call out people from surrounding areas.
Within two/three minutes, a large number of people would gather on the highway and they would block all types of vehicles, said the sources.
