Imphal, January 14, 2011:
Troops of 46 Assam Rifles of 27 Sector AR under the aegis of Red Shield Division in continuance of its persistent efforts to make Churachandpur drugs free destroyed 28 acres of poppy cultivation in the areas along Thingjang village on Thangjing ridge and New Seikot on Shingmun Ridge in the district on January 13, said a PIB (DW) release.
The operation was carried out jointly with personnel of Narcotics Control Bureau, Narcotics and Affairs of Border and civil police along with volunteers of AMADA and village chiefs of the region.
The team interacted with villagers and educated them on the ill effects of drugs and how the crop, though providing monetary benefits to the farmers, is proving harmful to the State and the country, the release informed adding that the formation has endeavoured to reach the root of the drug menace and uproot the cause of it from Churachandpur.
In doing so, the Sector had identified the areas of poppy/cannabis cultivation in the region, carried out destruction of the cultivated contraband crops, organised various sports events to draw the youth towards sports, undertook training of youth for Army and Assam Rifles recruitment rallies and organised the alternate crop distribution.
The efforts of the sector have been lauded by the local populace and has helped in improving the future of the youth of the district with a drugs free environment, it added.
