The Manipur Human Rights Commission has registered a case in connection with the tear gassing of students at Lamphel police station on July 23.The students were rounded up in connection with the agitation against the ceasefire extension and tear gases were fired at them at the police station after they were herded into a room.
A case for inquiry under U/S 12 (a) of the Protection of Human Rights Act, 1993 has been registered.
The Commission also issued notices on the DGP to submit a detailed report on the matter including the list of persons confined and injured in the incident and also the FIR No and copy of the FIRs, if any, registered against the individuals including students involved in the incident.
The DGP was asked to submit the report by August 23 and the next day has been fixed for hearing.
MHRC took up the case following a complaint petition filed by a lawyer, Meihoubam Rakesh who is also the coordinator of Legal Aide Programme of the Human Rights Alert.
His complaint was based on newspaper report published on July 24.The petition said that on July 22 a large number of students and some women were picked up from Samu Makhong and were later locked up inside a room at Lamphel police station and confined the whole night without food and water.
On the next day personnel of the police station fired tear as into the room where the protestors were locked up.
Some students were hit by the shells, said the petition.
A stampede ensued inside the room and many students were injured in the melee.
