Imphal, August 06:
Members of the Manipur University Teachers Association (MUTA) today unanimously resolved to demand removal of the university vice-chancellor (VC), Prof Hijam Tombi Singh, holding him responsible for the vitiating atmosphere of the university.
The MUTA however said it would give the opportunity to the VC to resign gracefully on his own, failing which an agitation would be launched to have him removed.
The resolution was taken during a general body meeting late this morning at the Mathematics lecture hall with MUTA president Dr.Th Ratankumar in the chair.
The meeting took note of the alleged failure of the VC on all fronts, decline of university atmosphere and his lack of academic leadership, according to reliable sources.
It may be mentioned that the same resolution was once adopted by the MUTA during its general body meeting on May 29, and the same was reaffirmed in another general body meeting on July 19.The resolution of July 19 meeting was also conveyed to the university chancellor and Governor, Ved Marwah, and the VC himself, the source s said.
However, the chancellor as well as the VC were learnt to be keeping silent on the matter.
As regards the failure to maintain the academic calendar, the final examinations of MA, MSc and MCom of 1999 have not yet been conducted.
On the other hand, the administration of the university has been seriously disrupted owing to the ongoing strike launched by the MU Staff Association protesting non-payment of salaries for two months.
The teachers of the university either have not received their salaries for three consecutive months.
