Mayang Imphal incident: Bodies seek speedy trial, exemplary punishment for culprits

Imphal, September 09 2020: Thangmeiband Apunba Nupi Lup (THANIL) has mourned the demise of the minor girl from Mayang Imphal on September 3 who was allegedly sexual assaulted on September 1 night.

She was recovered in an unconscious state from a roadside in Mayang Imphal on September 2 and rushed to hospital but succumbed the next day.

THANIL, in a statement, expressed concerned about the growing cases of rape and other crimes against women and girls in the State.

Saying that there are a lot of similar cases pending in the Court, THANIL sought speedy investigation and trial to ensure justice for all including the recent incident of Mayang Imphal.

Unless there are speedy trials and exemplary punishments are awarded to such criminals, crimes against women and children will continue, THANIL said.

Recalling the infamous "Nirbhaya Gang Rape Case", THANIL also asked all concerned to award capital punishment to those who have committed the inhumane and terrific crime.

The Government should also come up with stricter legislation or provision to ensure the safety of women and children, it said.

THANIL will extend support to agitation of JAC formed against the killing of the 14-year old girl, it continued while sharing the grief of the bereaved family.

JAC against the murder of Ningthoujam Babysana Chanu also echoed the need for expediting investigation, trials and conviction to ensure such crime against women and girls do not repeat in the State.

Women Association for Socio-Economic Development (WASEDEV), Palace Gate also expressed strong exception over the death of the minor girl from Mayang Imphal.

Citing many cases of deaths of women earlier, the association also demanded criminals involved in such disgusting crimes should be given befitting punishment so that crimes against women including domestic violence are put to an end.

The women in the State will never remain quiet if similar incidents repeat in the future, it continued.

Condemning the Mayang Imphal incident involving alleged sexual assault and death of one minor girl, the Chingya Youth Development Organisation, Mairenkhul along with EDSM staged a sit-in protest today at the Lilong Choabak Mairenkhul LP School ground.

The bodies also condemned the suspicious death of one woman who was found hung to death.

Further, they also demanded justice for the deceased and befitting punishment to those involved in the two separate incidents.

Meanwhile, Volunteers of AMMOCOC, UMMWDO, AMMGSU and AMMWDO continuing with their protest demonstrations in connection with the alleged gang rape and subsequent death of a 14-year-old girl started a poster campaign today.

"People should support this movement against such heinous crime.

We will continue to protest until befitting punishment is awarded to the culprits," said All Manipur Muslim Girl Students Union president Rukshar Choudhury speaking to media on the sideline.

Meanwhile, Future Pillar Group also organised a 'poster protest' at Wangoi Awang Leikai.

Future Pillar Group said they are protesting not only for the Mayang-Imphal incident but also against the increasing number of crimes against women in the State and demanded befitting punishment for the culprits.

"If the Government cannot provide security to women then at least they should pass stringent laws to prevent such heinous crimes," it said.

The group demanded the authorities concerned to take action against those who upload details of the victim on social media.

Keirao
Condemning the brutal crime committed against a minor girl and demanding capital punishment to be awarded to the culprits, the Manipur Muslim Unemployed and Backward Development Organization Manipur held a candle rally at Keirao Makting.

The organization also appealed all to stop targeting and committing crime against women.

Moirang
Demanding stringent punishments for culprits involved in physically assaulting a minor girl on September 2, who succumbed the following day at RIMS ICU, sit-in protests were also staged at Sunusiphai and Kwakta, Bishnupur, reports our Bishnupur correspondent.

The protest at Sunusiphai under Phubala Gram Panchayat was organised by Sunusiphai Youth Welfare Association, Sunusiphai.

Placards that read "We condemn the brutal torture and killing of 14 years old girl", "Stop negotiating with money or job in such heinous crime", "Stop violence against women", "Punish the guilty", "No mercy to rapist", "We want justice" etc.

were used by the protestors.

Whereas the demonstration at Kwakta Sabal Leikai was organised by Kwakta Sabal Leikai Development Organisation.

"Girls are gold not to be rape", "Hang the rapist until death", "No mercy to rapist" were the demands of the protestors there.
