CPI-M mourns passing of Buddhadeb Bhattacharya

The Manipur State Committee of Communist Party of India (Marxist) has condoled the demise of Buddhadeb Bhattacharya, former chief minister of West Bengal, who passed away on August 8, 2024, at the age of 80 .
According to a statement of the party, members of the Manipur State Committee of Communist Party of India (Marxist) paid tribute to Bhattacharya in a meeting held at the CPI-M office at Paona Keithel on Saturday, and recalled his significant contributions to the party and the Left movement.
A dedicated communist, Bhattacharya joined the party in 1966 and played a pivotal role as a member of the central committee and the polit bureau.
He served nearly three decades as a minister and chief minister of West Bengal, succeeding Jyoti Basu in 2000 .
Known for his passion for literature, Bhattacharya was a poet, playwright, and translator of international literary works, the statement said, while adding that CPI-M state committee observed a two-minute silence in his memory and extended heartfelt condolences to his family.
