Damages to crops in IE assessed

Imphal, May 09 2024:
After Thoubal, officials of Horticulture and Soil Conservation Department carried out a crop damage assessment drive in several areas of Imphal East today.
The survey team led by Additional Director of Horticulture and Soil Conservation Md Zakir Hussain inspected several fields where crops were damaged substantially in the recent hailstorm/thunderstorm of May 5 .
District officer of Horticulture and Soil Conservation, Imphal East Yeite Koireng and other top officials of the Department accompanied Md Zakir Hussain in the drive.
The team assured the affected farmers that the Government will provide all possible assistance to alleviate their suffering.
The areas where the assessment drive were carried out today were Lilong Arapti, Thiyam Konjil, Chanam Sandrok, Basikhong, Bamon Kampu under Keirao and Thongju Constituencies.
Reportedly, the team came across a dragon fruit farm and a banana farm which were damaged to a large extent in the natural calamity of May 5 .
Speaking to the media on the sideline of the visit, Md Zakir Hussain said that the hailstorm/thunderstorm of May 5 has caused extensive damage to many farmlands.
Saying that they took out the assessment drive under the instruction of Commissioner of Horticulrure and Soil Conservation Commissioner T Pamei, he appealed to the affected farmers in Imphal East to contact the officials of Horticulture and Soil Conservation in Imphal East and submit a report on crop loss so that the Government can take up necessary action.
A farmer from Lilong Arapti Soibam Maniton said that he planted dragonfruit, cucumber and sponge gourd in his farm but all of them have been destroyed at the time of harvest in the storm of May 5 .
Saying that continuing his business will be extremely difficult as most of his investment have been lost, the farmer added that he nonetheless is delighted to see the officials of Horticulture and Soil Conservation reaching out to them.
