Fish farmers urge for waiving loan interest

In all, 32 fish farmers from Ngaikhong Khullen, Ngaikhong Shiphai and Ngakchoupokpi under Ngaikhong Gram Panchayat, who had taken loan of Rs 2 lakh each from Manipur State Co-Operative Bank in 2019 as advised by the chief minister, have appealed for waiving their loan interest as they are unable to pay the interest due to Covid-19 pandemic.
Addressing a press meet on Monday, one of the fish farmers stated that they have been facing huge hardships as they are unable to sell the fish dueio Covid-19 pandemic.
On top of this iri April 2020, many of their fishes perished in large numbers, thus adding to the problems.
Consequently, their farms were visited by fisheries director, additional director and officials from the Fisheries Department who assured the loanees that some steps will be taken, but so far, no positive action has been taken, the farmer lamented.
He, on behalf of the loanee fish farmers appealed to the chief minister, fisheries minister and authority concerned to waive their loan interests in consideration of their present hapless condition.
