Imphal, August 31 2024:
Apunba Mayang Imphal Lourup Committee imposed an indefinite general strike along Mayai Lambi from Saturday midnight in protest against non-opening of the five shutters of Ithai Dam and non-payment of compensation to fish farmers whose farms were affected by the man-made flood resulting from keeping the shutters of the dam closed.
On Saturday, the Committee along with media persons inspected the fish farms and roads inundated by the flood caused by the non-opening of the shutters of Ithai Dam during the recent rains.
Speaking on the sidelines, Committee president Yumnam Nanao said that as the shutters of the dam failed to open on time, all the villages around Loktak Lake are experiencing a manmade flood, damaging crops and farms.
The fish farmers are particularly affected with majority of the fishes escaping in the flood.
The remaining fishes have died as the water got contaminated.
He continued that despite this, the five shutters continue to stay close and as such, the water levels are still rising, with the Mayang Imphal-Toubul and Mayang Imphal-Thanga Karang roads getting cut off.
In view of the difficulties faced by the fish farmers, the Committee urged the authority concerned to open all the five shutters of the dam and provide compensation to the farmers, on August 20 .
However, only two shutters were opened, which is doing nothing to resolve the inundation, he remarked.
Nanao then said that the Committee imposed the general strike along Mayai Lambi in consideration of the severity of the situation.
However, medical, education, media and religious activities will be exempted during the protest, he informed, while appealing to the people residing along Mayai Lambi to extend their support to the protest.
