Separate hospital for symptomatic COVID patients mooted

Imphal, October 29 2020: The Central team currently in the State to take stock of the COVID-19 situation today discussed setting aside a hospital for treatment of symptomatic COVID-19 patients while RIMS and JNIMS would be dedicated to treatment of critical illnesses.

The Central team headed by COVID-19 nodal officer and Ministry of Power Joint Secretary VK Dewangan met officials of RIMS, JNIMS and Health Department and collected detailed reports about the pandemic.

They are also collecting reports from different districts.

They expressed keen desire to State officials to raise the number of COVID-19 beds at both JNIMS and RIMS to 200 each or 250 each, if necessary.

They also expressed desire for early testing and treatment of COVID-19 positive people at district hospitals too by enhancing their infrastructure.

The Central team asked the State officials to set aside a separate hospital for treatment of symptomatic COVID-19 patients while RIMS and JNIMS would be dedicated to treatment of critical illnesses.

The State officials said that it would be more convenient if the separate hospital is created in the form of an extension to an existing hospital as it would facilitate prompt testing as well as consultation with specialist doctors.

The State Government has taken up necessary measures on the line of the Central team's advice.

The team visited Thoubal district hospital today and they would make an assessment of Churachandpur district hospital and Bishnupur district hospital tomorrow.

The same team would hold a meeting with State officials concerned on November 1 through video conference and determine what measures should be taken up to control the pandemic in the State, informed a source.

The Central team also asked the State officials to take up necessary steps so as to create proper awareness about the pandemic among the masses and the State officials assured that necessary steps would be taken in this regard.

On the other hand, officials of Health Department held a meeting on the pandemic with the Principal Secretary (Health) in the chair this morning.

The meeting deliberated on raising the COVID-19 beds from the existing 116 to 200 at RIMS and from 140 to 200 at JNIMS.

Subsequent upon the meeting, 40 beds have been added to the existing number of beds set aside of COVID-19 patients at RIMS.

The meeting also discussed about raising the number of combined COVID-19 beds of Shija Hospital and Raj Medicity to 75 .
