RIMS celebrates 38th foundation day

Imphal, September 14, 2009: The Regional Institute of Medical Sciences celebrated its 38th foundation day today at its jubilee hall.

The celebration was graced by Chief Minister Okram Ibobi as chief guest and Health and Family Welfare Minister Ph Parijat as president.

Meghalaya Deputy Chief Minister Dr Mukund Sangma, retired Head of Physiology Department RIMS Dr M Mahendra and retired Head of Pharmacology Department RIMS Dr Imoba were also present at the function as special invitees.

Presenting the annual report in his introductory speech, RIMS Director Prof Fimate recalled that RIMS was established in 1972. Now RIMS has developed into a 1074 bedded hospital.

It has intake capacity of 100 undergraduates and 73 post graduates.

On the average around, 2.6 outdoor patients came to RIMS annually.

The number of in-patients admitted in RIMS in a year is around 33,000. Prof Fimate said that RIMS would work continuously to provide better medical facilities to the people.

Addressing the function, Chief Minister O Ibobi noted that even as RIMS has been producing doctors every year, there was still shortage of doctors in Manipur.

Just as the Right to Education, which envisaged compulsory education to all children between 6-14 years, it has become a necessity to provide health care facilities to all citizens.

For this, a great number of doctors and specialists are needed, he said.

At present, the Government of Manipur as well as the people are facing several difficulties due to acute shortage of specialist doctors.

The Government understood the complaints about of absence of gynaecologists and paediatricians in interior areas of the state.

Noting that rural people were in dire need of specialist gynaecologists and paediatricians, the Chief Minister called upon medical students of RIMS to contribute their mite in addressing the people's grievances.

He further assured that intake capacity of post graduate and undergraduate students in RIMS would be enhanced.

Saying that 400 posts of doctors were in shortage in the state, Ph Parijat claimed that the State Government has decided to appoint the required number of doctors.

Recruitment of doctors would be done at the earliest through Manipur Public Service Commission, he said.

Saying that "we are proud of RIMS", he called upon the people to cooperate in developing RIMS furthermore.

Stressing on the need for hard work to make a hospital popular, Dr Mukun Sangma exhorted the young doctors to work tirelessly with dedication.

He advised the young doctors to set their aim on becoming super specialists and not just specialists.

Distribution of prizes to meritorious students, release of RIMS' newsletter Remedy, oath taking by students of 2008-09 batch and distribution of certificates were the other highlights of the function.

After inauguration of the newly constructed RIMS gate, a health mela was also organised to commemorate the occasion.
