Board honours meritorious students

The Board of secondary Education Manipur (BSEM) today honoured the top ten position holders of HSLC 2011 examination with the presentation of cash prizes and citations at JN Manipur Dance Academy.
Top ranked Ningthoujam Rishikanta was presented a 24-carat gold medal weighing one tola with a citation while Keisham Tampha Ibema Devi, second position holder in the same examination, was honoured for her labour with a silver medal (one total) and Rs 10,000 cash.
Soubam Daniel, who ranked third, was presented a citation along with Rs 8000 .
Apart from Rs 5000 each handed to the students who ranked from fourth to tenth positions, various other prizes/gifts donated by different institutions and individuals were also presented to students who excelled/topped in various subjects in the said examination.
As chief guest of the felicitation programme, former Director of Education Department (Schools) E Yaima conceded that one of the most important departments of the State is not immune to corruption and malpractices.
Contending that chronic administrative anomalies in the Education Department had been a curse for the student community rather than the Government's most vital organ serving as the facilitator in moulding careers of the students from a tender stage of life, he called upon every section of the society to contribute their mite in cleansing the Education Department of all the ills.
Noting that the issue of delay in ensuring text books to the students had been a regular problem since 2003, he cited issuance of order to publication firms for printing text books with the Board not in possession of the requisite fund as one of the chief factors.
With regard to the recent introduction of Meetei Mayek subject in the school curriculum, the former bureaucrat suggested constant and minute monitoring of whether the subject is being taught with propriety.
In his address, Director of Education (S) W Rajen Singh said students who excel in different stages of their academic careers need to be encouraged by all, specially in a problem-prone State like Manipur where the environment is not yet conducive for pursuing education.
He also applauded all the students who surmounted chaos-besieged Manipuri society and dedicated to studies.
Principal Secretary (Education) Dr J Suresh Babu, who also spoke at the occasion, sought the cooperation of all in correcting Manipur's education system.
Conveying that constructive suggestion would be helpful in the relentless effort of the Government to streamline the education system, he further mentioned that transforming Government-run schools to a compatible institution is highly dependent on commitment and role of the teachers.
