Imphal, August 31 2024:
The Government should act swiftly and take visible actions to bring peace in Manipur.
People can't wait for six months months, said Meira Paibis of Senjam Chirang who staged a sit-in protest today.
The Chief Minister making a promise to bring peace is a heartening but in six months' time, there would be no Meitei homes left in the peripheries of the valley adjoining the hills, they said.
The Meira Paibis staged the protest demonstration at Senjam Chirang community hall, under Sekmai AC.
Speaking to reporters during the sit-in protest, Meira Paibi leader Heikham ongbi Ambrabati said they denounced the rallies organised by the Kukis in some districts today.
The rallies are nothing but a design to pretend that they have been wronged and garner support, she said.
Ambrabati said the conflict has severely affected people in the fringe areas of the valley.
Leimakhong, Kanto, Khurkhul, Moibung Khunou, Chirang, Koutruk, Phayeng, Singda and Kadangband etc are places surrounded by Kuki villages.
The people of these villages have been subjected to heinous attacks.
Recently, armed Kukis fired scores of bullets and bombs at some places.
The attack against the Meitei settlements has not ceased, she said.
Even as they have been attacking Meitei settlements every now and then, they are organising rallies in Churachandpur and Delhi to cover their crimes and pretend they are the victims, she added.
Understanding this poly of the Kukis, the Nagas have imposed curbs on the rally in their areas, she said.
Ambrabati said Meitei houses in Leimakhong area have been levelled to the ground and the place has been occupied by the Kukis.
When the Central and the State security forces are unable to control and rein in Kukis at Leimakhong, it would be an impossible job for them to protect other Meitei areas in the extremely vulnerable areas, she said.
Dominated and occupied by the Kukis, vast tracts of agricultural fields belonging to Meiteis in the peripheries of Sekmai have been rendered useless and wasted.
The Government has announced compensation but very few people have got it, she said.
Other Meira Paibis at the protest said Chirang at present is being guarded by the Meira Paibis 24x7 .
The women alone can't guard the village forever.
The Government must take visible actions other than lip service to end the conflict and bring peace, they said.
