Imphal, August 31:
In place of a single Director looking after Education (S), the State Government is planning to keep two Directors in the Department, informed an official source.
The plan to keep two Directors in Education (S) is a part of the Government's initiative to improve the existing situation of school education in the State, informed the source.
While one Director will be looking after elementary schools, the other would be in charge of secondary education.
Even though it has not been decided as yet when the Government's plan would be implemented, the State Cabinet has already adopted a decision with regard to keeping two Directors in Education (S) Department, conveyed the official source.
Though there is only one Director in Education (S) at present, according to an order issued by the Department of Personnel based on a Cabinet decision, Commissioner Education (S) would wield the power of ex-officio Director while Additional Director, Hills and Valley will exercise the power of the Head of Department.
Even after the Government has appointed a Director in Education (S), the order issued by the Department of Personnel is still in force.
Such unclear division of official power and responsibility has been causing confusion among officials, conveyed the source.
Even as the Education (S) has the capacity to implement Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), the scheme is being implemented after recruiting a Project Director.
Under the arrangement, the scheme is suffering from lack of coordination and there is wide variation in the data collected, added the source.
Talking to The Sangai Express on the plan to keep two Directors in Education (S), Education Minister L Jayantakumar informed that the plan is being considered for implementation in accordance to a Cabinet decision taken by the Government earlier.
However, as the modalities and the positions to which the existing Director and the two Additional Directors currently exercising the power of Head of Department would be shifted have not been worked out, the exact time of implementing the plan cannot be finalised yet, disclosed the Minister.
