Imphal, August 10 2024:
All Naga Traders' Association Manipur (ANTAM) has demanded immediate action against escalating cases of illegal tax collection and harassment of transporters within the state.
Expressing deep concern over what it describes as an open secret, ANTAM highlighted how illegal taxation has become a daily occurrence, severely affecting the trading community and transporters.
In a statement, ANTAM criticised the state government for its inaction, accusing it of ignoring the plight of common people, particularly the daylight looting and intimidation faced by truck drivers.
The association stated that truck drivers are being harassed, with some even facing life-threatening situations over ransom demands.
Despite numerous complaints lodged with the authorities, the situation remains unchanged, causing significant distress and concern among traders.
In response, ANTAM has made an urgent appeal to the relevant authorities and agencies, demanding immediate and effective measures to address the issue.
ANTAM called for the closure of all check gates within the state to prevent illegal money collection from vehicles on the roads.
The association also urged for implementation of effective safety measures for transporters to prevent further damage and accidents.
Additionally, ANTAM requested establishment of a formal complaint mechanism for reporting illegal tax collection and harassment.
Highlighting a recent incident that occurred in the night of August 7, ANTAM reported that a truck bearing registration number AS25FC 0378 was intercepted, and goods were seized at the CoTU gate.
This incident, according to ANTAM, underscored the gravity of the situation.
The association is demanding compensation for the seized goods and affected traders, as well as a meeting with the concerned authorities to discuss and resolve the issue.
Furthermore, ANTAM is advocating for alternative measures for revenue collection that do not involve harassing traders and transporters.
The association has urged the state government to intervene and address this serious matter with urgency.
ANTAM strongly emphasised that the state government should ensure the safety of transporters and must implement necessary measures to avoid further damage and prevent any untoward incidents.
